May Weekender

Sedgefield's inaugural beer festival was kicked off in fine form on Friday - with a mixture of Sedgefield Saxons and Billingham IIIs take on Seaham, of Durham and Northumberland 3.

Kick off was pushed back an hour to accommodate for a few of the Sedgefield lads' drinking habits, the culprits of which were clear to see once the game kicked off. Seaham started the game strongly, scoring under the posts in the early stages - with sturdy phase play opening up space for well-drilled backs to ease through the Saxons' line. Sedgefield grew into the game: perhaps through some questionable decisions from special guest referee Mr Wardle, who was the main instigator of the pre-match pints, and admittedly utilised a lot of guesswork in his officiating. Seaham came back strong once more to finish the half.
Saxons made changes at halftime, with the Billingham lads keen to make an impact. Another substitution saw Doug Wardle return to the bar, with Mark Baldwin taking up refereeing duties. The second half offered a myriad of points, which was enjoyed by the large crowd: a good advert for social rugby. Seaham came out winners in the game and had the privilege of being the first team to lift the plate, however, Saxons still managed to spray the celebratory champagne in a way that only the Saxons can do.

Friday evening kicked off the festivities with a bang. Both Seaham and Billingham helped to make the night a success, staying around until late - ensuring a great rugby social.

Over the weekend the engagement with the festival was superb, the response from local residents was very positive; with some nice feedback coming to the club afterwards. Thanks must be extended to Three Brothers Brewing Co, Sedgefield Cricket Club, all beer barrel sponsors, the local teams who played on Friday, and volunteers attached to Sedgefield District RUFC.

Hanging up the Boots

After many years of service to Sedgefield District RUFC, Ian Slack announced his decision to retire from the game. Ian was a founding member of the club in 1985 and was instrumental in the early running of the club. As a celebration of Ian's career, the club commissioned a one-off beer, bearing the name 'Slack-Attack'.
