Sedgefield Saxons took to the pitch for the first time this year, facing local rivals Newton Aycliffe's second team Newtonians. The two teams have shared close results each time they have faced one another, with the reverse fixture at Aycliffe seeing the eleven Saxons lads on the pitch lose by only 8 points. Sedgefield announced a strong team, with some experience returning to the backs in the form of Jonny Parrish and John Pope.
Saxons started the game strongly, scoring two quick fire scores, fly-half Chris Parker adding points in impressive fashion. Sedgefield's second try came from Mike Jackaman, his first ever for the club - bundling his way through numerous tackles on his way to the line. Sedgefield found themselves in a very strong position at the early stage of the game: 17-0 up. Newtonians regrouped under their posts and came back to score before the break, taking a bit of wind out of the Sedgefield sail.
The start of the second half began much in the same manner as the end of the first, with Aycliffe battling hard and making good ground through a smart kicking game. Sedgefield seemed to be soaking up the pressure until a yellow card to captain Graham Brennan. In this ten minute period Newtonian tails were up, and their pressure duly paid, scoring tries to put them ahead on the score sheet. Towards the end of the game the tide seemed to be swaying back into Sedgefield's favour, Brennan determined to make amends by breaking tackles in his own 22 and making his way over the half way line in possession. In the end it was a game of two halves, Sedgefield starting fast but all respect must go to Newtonians; who weathered the storm and completed a remarkable comeback in the second half.
